The prolific maestro, who had been in fragile health conditions during the past year due to cancer, died at the age of 80 at Tehran's Jam Hospital on Thursday.
In March 2016, Shajarian revealed that he had been receiving treatment for kidney cancer for some 15 years, both inside and outside of Iran.
Shajarian was the undisputed master of Persian traditional (classical) singing and is regarded as a national treasure by both musicians and music lovers.
